Chinese Freedom - Contemporary Artistic Text in the Post - Totalitarianism Society

Fu xiaodong (Curator, Critic)

The former president of Czech, Václav Havel (who initiated “Velvet Revolution”) said: “Between the aims of the post-totalitarian system and the aims of life there is a yawning abyss: while life, in its essence, moves toward plurality, diversity, independent self-constitution, and self organization, in short, toward the fulfilment of its own freedom, the post-totalitarian system demands conformity, uniformity, and discipline. While life ever strives to create new and improbable structures, the post - totalitarian system contrives to force life into its most probable states.”

China has passed the time of revolutions, but entered the age of consumerism. Any independent has to face the new problematic system. One has his certain pattern to defuse the conflicts in various dimensions: to speak against his will, to attend insignificant meetings and ceremonies, to go with the stream, to not expose the true thoughts, to be low profile and to hide.

These phenomenons reveal the disharmony between humanity and social system.
Some take advantages of the uncertain system and benefit themselves. Under the cover of the scheme, they regard selves as the social drive, thus the ‘survivals’ of the powerless have turned into the power. “The centrality of verity is power”, the value of justice, dignity, belief and innovation have become redundant. The occurrence appears in the social relationships, e.g.: institution and educator, authority and author, discipline and transgressor, government and appeal, even the gallery and artist. The close related economic interest, administration power and discourse right are socialised and more comrades are fascinated to be involved of the authority. These have caused the unmoral and uniformed situation.

The Chinese exhibition title “Slash Tongue” designates a corporal punishment in the Qing Dynasty. In “The Book of Former Han”: “…first to stab the face, lop the nose, cut off the legs and slash the waist, then chop the corpse into mince. Those complainers and gossips would have the tongues slashed. These are the five penalties...” In the ancient history, the hierarchs not only dispossessed the permission to speak, but also deprived the right to complain. The English exhibition title “Chinese Freedom” is the metaphor of the intellectuals’ oppression in the post – totalitarianism society. The political interventions on the academic freedom, as well as the temptation and pressure from the capital, the intellectuals have been compromising to the market and populace to keep the integration of the falsehood. They have become the slave of the bureaucracy and media with commercialised logics. In the shadow of money, mercantile doctrine and commence empire, the intellectuals have lost the faith and being very negative about the society. Nihilism and cynicism have been the explanation for not participant in the civilization and give up the politics. The uniformed group have converted themselves to understand, to accept, to restrain, and to evade in the existed system; privatised value is a common observable fact. Cynicism has extinct of political expectation and decreased the ambitious. The more actual and speculate choice have drawn back the culture appreciation.

“Chinese Freedom” is also a metaphor for the individual experience in the post – totalitarianism society, for the one who refuses to convert. In the exhibition, the artists try to eliminate the customary experience and innovate the possible aethetic expression. Huang Yongping suggests: “Chinese Freedom is a disbelief and destruction of the language system. It is also a starting point for the novel expression and discourse manner.”
